A realistic sequence for indie authors who do not have a publisher's marketing department behind them.
Self-published authors have an advantage traditional authors rarely have: full control of pricing, metadata, description copy, and timing. The disadvantage is that nobody else will do the work.
Begin with reader definition. Not demographics — reading behaviour. Which authors do they already buy? Which tropes do they search for? Which series do they finish?
Then align the book: cover, title, subtitle, categories, keywords, and description should all say the same thing to the same reader.
Only after that does promotion make sense. Outreach, newsletter swaps, Goodreads presence, and advertising all work better against a listing that already converts.
